The Empty Can Test is used to assess the supraspinatus muscle and tendon. This results in a thumbs-down position, as if the patient were pouring liquid out of. A positive test indicates a tear to the supraspinatus tendon or muscle and can 30 degrees to the scapular plane with thumbs down to the empty can position.
